Overview: Originally Liz's illustrations for the Rider-Waite-Smith based deck were carved onto wood and released as a limited edition set. Finally published in card format along with quick instructions on how to use these cards for fortune telling and also a medieval card game.Illustration: The carvings created for this deck are detailed and have great character, I would love to see what the wooden decks look like. The characters are not too comical looking to be off-putting but are also real enough to engaging in the use of these cards as Tarot.Because there is only light and shade for definition an understanding of basic card meanings would help as a lot of cards use colour to represent the meaning. How some of this was overcome with these cards are the three key words given on each card. The cards also lend themselves well for meditation, as you can easily look into them for quiet some time searching for the hidden symbols.Theme/Lore: There are so many different stereotypy's for pirates and pirate law that if not done correctly comes across very poorly, thankfully this is not the case here. The theme is woven into the cards so well that nothing feels out of place. The suits are Pistols - Wands - Fire, Swords - Swords - Air, Cups - Cups - Water and Coins - Pentacles - Earth. The court cards are Cabin Boy - Page, First Mate - Knights, Lady Captain - Queens and Captain - Kings.Book/Supplementary Information: You are supplied with a sheet of information about how to use the cards and a couple of spreads.Design/Packaging: Personally I think that the border on the cards distract from the carvings. Because there is no other colour but the grain of the wood it can feel a little washed out and if there is any light reflection on the cards you will have to move the card to another angle to see the outline clearly. The card GSM is quite thick and the laminate is glossy. Cards are large so people with smaller hands may find them hard to shuffle. So, I really like this deck. Like, a lot. But as others have said, the cards are huge. For this particular deck, I sliced off the side that said PIRATE (saved 'em for bookmarks) and the excess borders before curving the edges. They fit my hands much better and I have a far easier time shuffling the deck now. I know some may scream sacrilege, but I've been reading tarot for 22 years (I also do it professionally) and the deck functions far better for me as I've modified it.I bought this deck for the artwork. I am a big fan of dynamic black and white drawing, having drawn a tarot deck of my own in black and white ([...] My deck uses some crosshatching. This deck is just well crafted lines and fills. In some places there is woodgrain added and some patterns on clothing, which is sort of like crosshatching, but not really. The art is mostly line and fill. And well done drawings too. I am not a fan of pirates. I wish I could get this artists to draw a deck with me as a collaboration. We'd do something else. As a tarot deck I don't like it that much. The cards are too big and thick for shuffling. I don't like the inclusion of the work "PIRATE" in the margin of every card. That just makes the cards bigger for no good reason. It's weird. So I might not recommend it as a tarot deck. But as art, I like it.There’s nothing too special about this deck. It’s a classical tarot format using Pirate images. The images on the cards don’t have much contrast, so it’s hard to really see the images. The other downside is that they are very large and awkward to shuffle. It’s a good novelty deck for Pirate fans like myself to display as art, but it’s not a deck I would use for readings. The deck itself is awesome and a great addition to my collection. The card stock is nice like other quality oracle/tarot decks. But, it was not a brand new deck and the package /boxing was ripped open too. I am just glad all the cards were accounted for. The card edges are dented too. That is why I did not rate it 5 stars. Otherwise, it is a 5 star deck. These things must be made with plastic and cardboard. I do not want to meet the person that can actually shuffle them, these things are double the size of a big deck. The backs are a great wood pattern but the fronts are off center with a giant PIRATE along the size. Just seem cheesy... since I like all things Pirate... they will do but the story behind them and the intention are lost in the way too glossy finish, the impossible to handle size and rigidness, and the less than crystal clear printing. Disappointing at best but pirate so they are keepersThe cards are too large and cannot be easily shuffled. If you look on the image of the cover of the box, you see a brown rectangle which is the size and aspect ratio of most Tarot cards... and there is a white border with a large side margin that says "PIRATE". All the cards are like that. The "PIRATE" label and white margin are quite superfluous and are what make the cards too large to shuffle. Also, the symbolism is ok, but the images are all monochrome brown, which is not terribly engaging from the querant's point of view.Beautiful designs for the pirate lovers. Easy to use. Comes with beginners instructions.I collect tarot packs, and this one has an intriguing theme - pirates - and execution - the original of these printed cards were carved into wood and the designs have a period 'scrimshaw' look which is keeping with the theme. Unfortunately the photographic reproduction is rather 'flat' with not enough colour contrast to read easily and the thick border makes the cards in this format very large and difficult to handle (though not a problem for anyone used to using some of the more esoteric packs). The colour of the backs is the same sepia/wood colour as the fronts, which could also be confusing. The pack is advertised as containing 'two fortune-telling games' - which is rather like advertising an ordinary pack of cards as containing 100 games of chance! In fact the accompanying leaflet - not, as is traditional a 'Little White Book' (LWB) giving the background to these specific designs and how to read them - merely describes the usual fortune-telling layout and how to play the traditional 'trumps' game. However, for an experienced user these are basically Rider-Waite designs, with a few twists ('walking the plank' is a major trump) which will add interest and a new dimension to readings. The artwork is traditionally figurative and easy to understand. I'm pleased to have it in my collection and am looking forward to exploring it in more detail.C' est un fort beau tarot divinatoire que vous aurez entre les mains !
